Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women in the US after skin cancer. In fact, breast cancer affects men as well, but this is quite rare.In the year 2018, it was estimated that there would be 266,120 new cases of female breast cancer and 2,550 cases of male breast cancer.
Thanks to a better understanding of breast cancer, the number of deaths due to breast cancers have been steadily declining due to advances in early detection technology and treatment options. According to recent data, the overall 5-year survival rate for localized disease is 99%.
The mammogram is an important diagnostic tool in the fight against breast cancer. It is a specialized type of X-ray that allows examination of suspicious areas of the breast. A very small amount of ionizing radiation is used to produce an image of the breast. The image may be able to accurately show very tiny breast lumps or specks that cannot be felt on physical examination.
The general recommendation is that women who are 40 years of age or older should have mammograms every 1-2 years. Younger women who have a higher risk for developing breast cancer should discuss with their healthcare provider when and how often they should have mammograms performed. Risk factors include:
- Positive personal or family history of breast cancer
- Genetic predisposition
- Radiation exposure
- Beginning periods at an early age
- Going into menopause at a late age
- Having your first child after the age of 30 years
- Never being pregnant
- Being on postmenopausal hormone therapy
- Drinking alcohol
- Smoking
