In the long stretch of time between winter vacation and the summer holidays, many of us get ready for spring break. But before you rush headlong into the beach for some well-deserved rest and relaxation, you must ensure you are adequately protected from the most common form of cancer diagnosed in the US – skin cancer.
Exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun is responsible for 90% of all skin cancers. Every type of skin that is exposed to the sun is in danger of developing skin cancer with those that have pale skin, light hair and eyes being at a higher risk. Skin cancer can disfigure, and it can be deadly. Fortunately, most forms of skin cancer can be prevented.
Did you know that ultraviolet radiation from the sun can pass through closed glass windows to damage your skin? How much greater the damage these UV rays can do to your skin when you are at the beach in swimwear. Using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is an absolute must. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of the sunscreen’s ability to prevent skin damage. When planning extended fun activities on the beach opt for a water-resistant sun screen with an SPF of 30 or higher. To make sure you avoid missing any areas on your body, apply sunscreen on your entire body before putting on your swimsuit and reapply every 2 hours, or after excessive swimming or sweating.
If you have made up your mind to head out to the beach or pool party during spring break, a high-quality sunscreen should be an indispensable part of your travel kit – Don’t go on spring break without it!
