Do you have an upcoming surgery planned? Did you know that there are things you can do in the weeks before to help you have a successful outcome and a quicker recovery? The following steps will adequately prepare you for surgery:
- Be in your best state of health: Start with a healthy diet and exercise. It’s important to take your health seriously in the weeks leading up to your surgery. Establishing a great health routine is vital. You can start an exercise regimen such as walking, stretching, or yoga if you are able. Establish a clean and healthy diet. Avoid processed foods and excess sugars which can lead to overall inflammation in your body. Eating a balanced amount of whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and lean protein can help reduce infection and speed up healing. Whole foods contain vitamins and minerals which will benefit you before, during, and after surgery. Try your best to kick any bad habits you may have, such as smoking, vaping, or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
There is no better time to get serious about your health! - Talk with your surgical team about your treatment plan: It’s important to know what to expect. Ask your physician about the possible outcomes and risks. Be sure you understand what to expect after surgery and the days following. Take some to study the procedure you will undergo and become as familiar with it as you can. Talk with your physicians about any fears or questions you may have. Having all your questions answered can help alleviate any fears or anxiety you may have.
- Prepare your home: Depending on the type of surgery you are having, there are some precautions you can take to ensure you are safe by preventing any injuries after surgery. For example, check rugs to ensure you don’t get tripped on a corner. Take some time to declutter any areas that need it. Stock your pantry and freezer. Make sure you have healthy foods on hand and possibly a few meals that are ready-made or easy to prepare.
- Pack a bag: Whether you are having an outpatient surgery or will be staying in the hospital for a few days, having what you need will remove needless stress on you and allow you to focus on your recovery. Be sure to make a list and pack all essential items, like physician- approved medications, loose-fitting clothing, driver’s license, health insurance card, and anything else you may need while away from home.
- Know your medications: This is crucial in order to keep you safe and healthy during surgery and recovery. Be sure to ask your doctor if there are any medications you need to quit taking prior to surgery and when you should resume taking them. Go to your pharmacy and get all the medications you need for your recovery ahead of time. It’s much less stressful to take care of this prior to your surgery day if possible. Write down all medications you will be taking post surgery for your peace of mind.
- Line up Caregivers: Set up a caregiver that can take you to and from surgery. This can be a spouse, friend, or family member. It’s a good idea to have this person stay with you for a few days after surgery to help you with simple activities you may not be able to do on your own.
- Follow all preoperative instructions: As your surgery date approaches, you will have a preoperative appointment. During this appointment, your doctor will go over detailed instructions. It’s a good idea to bring someone with you to this appointment to help you remember and follow the pre and post-op instructions. It’s important that you take these instructions seriously and look over them a few times ahead of your surgery. These instructions may include things you will need to do up to a few days before your scheduled surgery. Ask your doctor if you have any questions regarding your instructions.
