Widely known and respected for the creating modular replacement for the shoulder, Dr. Wayne Burkhead, MD has been a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing at The Carrell Clinic in Dallas, TX since 1983. As the author of scientific articles, book chapters and textbooks on the subject of the rotator cuff and dislocating shoulder, Dr. Burkhead has lectured at both national and international conferences and holds numerous awards and accolades for his work. Most recently named the President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, Dr. Burkhead is considered an expert in the field and is esteemed amongst his peers.
After graduating from Southern Methodist University, Dr. Burkhead went on to earn his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He completed a fellowship in shoulder reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas Health Center at San Antonio under the direction of Charles A. Rockwood Jr., MD, one of the world’s foremost shoulder surgeons.
Though he’s performed thousands of arthroscopic, reconstructive and replacement surgeries, Dr. Burkhead treats each patient as a unique case, and prides himself on treating several generations of patients from a family. He even worked with the Dallas Cowboys from 1990-1998, helping the team members recover from shoulder and joint problems throughout the regular season and the practice season.
Dr. Burkhead is also the lead singer and founder of the all-doctor classic rock band “Doctor Doctor,” a band that performs for charitable benefits and is the only band to accept insurance. As the original founder of the Dallas Arthritis Foundation Bone Bash, which is thrown on Halloween each year to benefit the Arthritis Foundation, Dr. Burkhead continues to be an advocate for those with a variety of orthopaedic needs.
In his personal life, Dr. Burkhead is a devoted father of three and an avid weekend rancher at the Rockin’ Z Ranch in Alvarado, Texas, where he raises red tail deer and cares for llamas, goats and even zebras.
